European Network on Extreme fiRe behaviOr
COST Action 22164
Navigating the fire environment to ignite preparedness and readiness for extreme wildfires
Description
Recent destructive fire seasons indicate the emergence of a new era of extreme wildfires that challenge our adaptation limits. Despite considerable progress in understanding extreme fire behaviour in recent decades, our current knowledge falls short in accurately predicting the size and intensity of recent extreme events. There is still much work needed to advance our capability to identify those situations where extreme fire behaviour may occur. This is a challenging endeavour that calls for reevaluating current knowledge and introducing new paradigms.
NERO confronts this challenge by uniting wildfire researchers and practitioners to advance our scientific understanding, thus making a pivotal step toward improving fire management, firefighter training and safety, and public safety planning. NERO aims to cultivate a European culture that fosters effective cross-boundary sharing of expert knowledge, including data and tools. Significantly, NERO aims to bridge the gap between scientific findings and practical application, advocating for efficient science-based wildfire management. Leveraging COST networking tools, NERO will train a new generation of highly qualified researchers and practitioners, specialized in addressing the challenges posed by extreme wildfires.
Objectives
The overarching goal of NERO is to create and coordinate an international network that brings together wildfire scientists and practitioners to address the challenge of understanding and predicting extreme fire behaviour.
The Action has a total of 14 specific objectives, divided into 9 objectives on research coordination and 5 objectives on capacity building.
Approach
The activities of NERO are organized into 3 cross-cutting WGs, resembling 3 overlapping research areas, plus 1 WG devoted to communication and outreach.
WG1: Historical Extreme Wildfires
WG1 focuses on collecting the data required to support the systematic analysis of extreme fire behaviour.
WG2: Process-based Analysis of Extreme Fire Behaviour
WG2 focuses on investigating the drivers of extreme fire behaviour and developing new or improved models/tools to support capacity-building and raise awareness.
WG3: Capacity-building
WG3 aims to open new pathways for capacity building and improved training and safety across Europe.
WG4: Communication and Outreach
WG4 focuses on maximizing the impact of NERO and guaranteeing the network’s sustainability through effective communication and outreach activities.

The funding of the NERO COST action activities is supported by the COST Agency.
COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) is a funding agency for research and innovation networks. Our Actions help connect research initiatives across Europe and enable scientists to grow their ideas by sharing them with their peers. This boosts their research, career, and innovation.
